3 to 4 percent of the population have a phobia to blood or a related disorder (needles etc). These cause fainting, vomiting and a change in heart rate, linked to trauma in childhood or adolescence, but may also be genetic. Blood phobia is different to other phobias – it slows down blood pressure and heart rate on sight of blood, rather than increasing like most phobias do, often causing fainting.
